1. While transferring a converted presentation from Impatica for PowerPoint BlackBerry Edition to my BlackBerry (8700 or 8100) the backlight (also referred to as a screen saver) turns off and the transfer fails to complete. What's going on?
There is a known issue on 8700 and 8100 (Pearl) devices where the USB connection is terminated when the backlight turns off. To workaround this problem, set the backlight timeout to 2 min or move the trackwheel or trackball continuously until the transfer completes.

2. While attempting to transfer a converted presentation from Impatica for PowerPoint BlackBerry Edition to my BlackBerry I get a message "USB Error - There was an error during the transfer. Please make sure the handheld is connected and ready, and try again". What do I do?
This message can occur if:

  1. You have not selected "Wait for PC Transfer" in the Impatica Presentation Viewer on your BlackBerry.
  2. You have not connected your BlackBerry to the computer using the provided USB cable.
  3. Your IT Policy restricts third party applications from accessing the USB port. Check with your BES administrator if this is the case.
  4. You do not have the Desktop Manager installed and set to use your BlackBerry device.

3. When I select the "Wait for PC Transfer" option the following error box appears - "Flash memory low!" What does that mean?
This message can occur if you don’t have sufficient space on your BlackBerry to store the presentation. It occurs when there is less than 512 KB of memory available. A good test would be to try a one slide PowerPoint presentation (with a box autoshape or something simple on it) and try transferring that to your BlackBerry. If it transfers successfully, the "Flash memory low!" message you saw previously can be attributed to a lack of available space on the BlackBerry.

4. When transferring an impaticized presentation to the BlackBerry using the Impatica Presentation Viewer I get the error "Your IT Policy restricts third party applications from accessing the serial port". Why is that happening?
This is likely the result of your BlackBerry Enterprise Server's IT Policy restrictions. Please contact your BES Administrator to have the following settings adjusted:

Security Policy Group:

  • "Allow Third Party Apps to Use Persistent Store" set to TRUE
  • "Allow Third Party Apps to Use Serial Port" set to TRUE
  • "Disallow Third Party Application Downloads" set to FALSE
Bluetooth Policy Group:
  • "Disable Serial Port Profile" set to FALSE
  • "Disable Pairing" set to FALSE
  • "Disable Bluetooth" set to FALSE
In addition to this, if you’re getting an "Uncaught exception: net.rim.device.api.system.Controlled Access Exception" error, you can resolve the problem by navigating on your BlackBerry to Options > Advanced Options > Applications > Impatica Presentation Viewer > Edit Permissions.

If "Connections" is set to "Deny" or "Custom", reset it manually to "Allow".

You will need to exit this menu and restart your BlackBerry. Please e-mail support@impatica.com if you require further assistance.

5. I'm having problems loading a presentation over-the-air. What might be going wrong?
The most likely cause of these over-the-air loading problems is not having the MIME types set on your web server. There are two possible scenarios that may arise:

  1. You try to view the auto-generated .wml file and you see the text of the file instead (i.e., you see all the wml code instead of the web page). This means that the wml MIME type is not set correctly on the web server.
  2. You try to click on a link to a .jad file and the BlackBerry says it does not know what to do with the file. This would indicate that the jad MIME type is not set on the web server.
The MIME types to be set can be found on page 14 of the ShowMate 2.2 manual. Here there are for quick reference:
  • text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor .jad
  • text/vnd.wap.wml .wml
  • application/vnd.rim.cod .cod

6. I have purchased a BlackBerry 8800 device and I cannot get the "Put File" functionality of your Impatica for PowerPoint BlackBerry Edition (v 3.6.2 and earlier) software to work. I get one of the following errors: "USB error: There was an error during the transfer. Please make sure the handheld is connected and ready, and try again" or "USB Error: Your IT Policy restricts third party applications from accessing the serial port". How can I resolve this issue?
There is a known issue with the BlackBerry 8800 and some early 8100 devices; those with 4.2.0+ BlackBerry operating systems. The issue is related to a change, implemented by RIM, on how USB channels can be called upon by third-party applications. To use your ShowMate with these BlackBerry devices please ensure that you have the latest upgrades for all software and firmware:
