Designing for Performance: Slide Sizes

Impaticized content is most often viewed within a Web browser. Given this fact, it is recommended that you resize your PowerPoint slide dimensions to produce content that is easily viewed at 800x600 screen resolutions before impaticizing your content. To achieve this, open the PowerPoint file in PowerPoint; Select “Page Setup” from the “File” menu; from the resulting “Page Setup” dialog box, change the slide size to 19.05 x 14.22cm (7.5 x 5.6 inches) from the default 25.4 x 19.05cm (10 x 7.5 inches) slide dimension. These dimensions will achieve a proportionate slide size reduction and should therefore not distort any of the current slide content.

To view other slide size reduction options, refer to this chart on our Web site (.pdf document).

Mastering Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Master

Use PowerPoint’s "Slide Master" page to design the style of your pages BEFORE you start designing your presentation. This is the place to put your company logo, instead of placing it on every single slide. This is also the place to set up all your fonts, size, and slide color scheme. This will save you hours of extra work formatting every single slide and it will keep your source PowerPoint file size to a minimum.

After conversion, ensure that you keep a backup of your PowerPoint file in case you need to re-impaticize it at a later date.

Zip it! Delivering Impatica Content Through LMS Systems

ZIP Package for Learning Management Systems: With version 3, Impatica for PowerPoint can be used to generate a zip file containing the impaticized presentation, HTML file and player .jar file. This zip file can then be used to easily upload content to a learning management system. To produce the zip package file, select the “Zip package” checkbox on the “Extra Output Files” tab. By default, the zip package will be stored in the same location as the source PowerPoint file.

For more information on how to deliver Impatica content through LMS systems, please view the tutorials on our Web site.

Using Embedded Sounds in Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint has a maximum embedded sound file size setting. If your sound files are larger than those that PowerPoint allows to have embedded, by default (100 KB), then that sound files will be linked to your presentation. While Impatica for PowerPoint does support linked sound files, if a link is broken then your sound will not be impaticized with the PowerPoint file. In order to avoid this and to simplify your file management, it is advised that you adjust your PowerPoint settings so that your sound files are embedded rather than linked. With both methods, the size of the resulting Impatica file will be the same.

To adjust your PowerPoint settings for maximum embedded sound file size:
  1. Open the presentation in PowerPoint
  2. Select Tools -> Options
  3. On the resulting dialog box select the General tab.
  4. In the area for "Link sounds with file size greater than..." settings, change this number to 50,000 kb from the usual default size of 100 kb.
PowerPoint only allows WAV files to be embedded within a presentation. All other file types will remain linked.
